MEGA WAVE PTO

Carnegie Clean Energy, through its wholly owned subsidiary CETO Wave Energy Ireland (CWEI), has secured a key role as an industry partner and technology representative in the MEGA WAVE PTO Project.

Funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe Programme, this initiative is focused on developing the next generation of modular Power Take-Off (PTO) systems. As the “engine” of a wave energy converter, the PTO is responsible for converting the motion of ocean waves into clean, reliable electricity. This project aims to create a smart, scalable system that can be adapted for a wide range of devices, from small-scale demonstrators to utility-scale, megawatt-class converters.

Key objectives include:
  • Demonstrate a reliable all-electric PTO system.

  • Optimise system performance and durability through advanced control techniques.

  • Increase device availability and cut operating costs by 50%.

  • Use recyclable materials in manufacturing.

  • Reduce Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) by 30-40%.

  • Strengthen Europe’s industrial supply chain.

  • Share knowledge on wave energy operations and maintenance.

  • Develop engineering and manufacturing design tools for the industry.

  • Advance technology readiness with onshore testing at 1 and 100 kW levels.

Carnegie’s Strategic Role

Representing the perspective of a leading wave energy technology developer, Carnegie’s team—including members from the ACHIEVE Programme —will provide critical technical support to the consortium. By acting as the “technology representative,” CWEI ensures that the PTO innovations are grounded in the practical requirements of real-world deployments.

CETO’s unique requirements will serve as a benchmark for the project’s design tools and testing. This collaboration allows Carnegie to leverage international expertise and apply the lessons learned directly to the CETO commercialisation pathway, ensuring future arrays are equipped with the most robust and cost-effective power generation technology.

The MEGA WAVE PTO Consortium

Coordinated by WavEC Offshore Renewables (Portugal) and supported by the University of Edinburgh (UK) as technical coordinator, the project brings together a group of 12 innovators from seven European countries:
